Santillana del Mar is among the best-preserved medieval villages in all of Europe, as well as a classified historical landmark of Spain. It’s easy to spend time wandering its maize of cobblestone streets lined with charming old residences, its medieval church and cloister. From Santillana, the famed prehistoric paintings of the Altamira Caves are just a short drive away. Although the original caves are now closed to the public, Altamira II, a perfect reproduction, is well worth your while.
You’ll have easy access to Santillana and the surrounding sights from this spacious stone house within walking distance of the village. Set in grounds of over an acre, the house has lovely views over the village and the surrounding countryside. The large natural garden includes an expansive lawn, fruit trees and a variety of shrubs. In front of the house is a large covered dining terrace, the perfect spot of leisurely al fresco meals. Set to the side is a swimming pool with ample lounging furniture. Inside, the house has been well designed combining both modern and traditional styles. Open, airy rooms with large windows are highlighted by wood-accented ceilings, wood shutters, beautiful tile floors and pastel walls. Furnishings are casual and contemporary and the house is equipped with all amenities and conveniences. A stone archway to the right of the entry hall opens to the living room with large picture windows over the country views and doors to the covered dining terrace. Comfortable seating includes a leather sofa and easy chairs grouped around a small coffee table. Behind is a rectangular wood dining table and chairs. To the left of the entry a brick arch leads to the spacious kitchen, well designed and fully equipped. Cooks of all levels will enjoy the expansive rose granite preparation space, pretty oak cabinets and white tile walls with decorative friezes. A counter separates the work area from the dining area with a long wood country table. There are a total of 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms and bathrooms are on the entry level – one with a double bed and another with twins. The double bedroom has a door to a balcony with country views and an ensuite bathroom. The twin bedroom has a bathroom nearby on the hall. Stairs from the entry lead to two more bedrooms and bathrooms – one queen with ensuite bath and a king with bathroom on the hall. All of the bedrooms are attractively decorated with pretty bedcovers, curtains, side tables and ample wardrobe space. In addition, they have sofas convertible to beds most appropriate for children. All the bathrooms feature beautiful ceramic tilework and top-quality fixtures. Also upstairs is a game room with billiard table and doors to balconies. A home combining the best of contemporary comfort with traditional charm, within a short walk of an atmospheric medieval village. |
